HKScan commences Finnish pork exports to China

FBR Staff Writer Published 24 April 2018

HKScan has started exporting its pork products manufactured from its Forssa production unit in Finland to China.

The Nordic food company has dispatched the first container of the Finnish pork exports, weighing 25,000kg, to Tianjin Port in Northern China.

HKScan plans to ship nearly three million kilograms of pork to China during the first year of the launch and is aiming to triple the volume by 2020. It has claimed that this will translate to more than 5% of all Finnish-reared pigs ending up on Chinese dining tables.

HKScan exports head Jukka Nikkinen said: “The Chinese utilize all parts of the carcass in their cuisine.

"Our customers are interested in carcass parts that might seem exotic from a European perspective, such as meaty bones and feet, which are highly valued and important raw ingredients in Chinese cuisine. These cuts are also included in the first shipment.”

The company’s Forssa plant, which holds export licenses for the US, Russia and other markets, was given an export permit by Chinese food authorities in November 2017.

In late February, HKScan made a deal with local pork producer Zhejiang Qinglian Food to create a joint venture (JV) to facilitate the sale of its Finnish pork products to Chinese consumers.

The JV will help bring pork products such as sirloin and tenderloin, which otherwise were mainly available only in the Nordic countries in the past.

Other Finnish pork products like Rypsiporsas (Omega-3 Pork), which are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, will also be sold and marketed in China through the JV. The Finnish pork products from HKScan will be sold to the retail sector, the HoReCa segment and industrial customers across China.

HKScan CEO Jari Latvanen said: “We are delighted to have the opportunity to celebrate the long-awaited launch of Chinese exports from our Forssa unit. This milestone will open up new earnings opportunities for our entire value chain and strengthen confidence in the international competitiveness of the Finnish food industry.”
